Acting Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Antonio Carpio will convene the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Monday (June 4) to start the selection process on who will replace impeached Chief Justice Renato C. Corona.
“Justice Carpio called the JBC to convene. One of its agenda is to discuss the vacancy in the Chief Justice position,” Acting SC Spokesperson Atty. Ma. Victoria Gleoresty Guerra said on Thursday.
The JBC is a constitutional body mandated to screen applicants to the Judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman.
It is composed of the Chief Justice as ex-officio chairman, the secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ), and a representative from both the House of Representatives and the Senate as ex-officio members, a representative of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), a professor of law, a retired member of the SC, and a representative of the private sector.
The recommendations of the JBC shall be submitted to the President who has to choose within 90 days to make the appointment to fill up the vacancy.
