Vietnam Defeated by Philippines Suzuki Cup

The Philippines came through with a stirring 2-0 upset of defending champion Vietnam on Monday and found itself surprisingly on top of the Group B tournament of the AFF Suzuki Cup at the My Din National Stadium in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi Sunday night.

On what can be regarded as the biggest night for Philippine football, veterans Chris Greatwitch and Phil Younghusband booted in a goal in each half to propel the Filipino booters to first place in the four-nation tourney with three points from the huge victory.

They now have four points following their 1-all draw against Singapore, which nipped Myanmar, 2-1, in the other match and had the same points but was in second due to goal difference.

The resurgent Filipinos try to book a place in the semifinals when they face the Burmese in last day of the event Tuesday.

Taking a long cross from Anton del Rosario, Greatwich came through with the icebreaker in a the 38th minute, making a like a contortionist in scoring on a twisting diving header that sailed by offguard Vietnamese goalie Duong Hong Son and into the lower left corner of the net.

On the other hand, Younghusband, after missing on ab earlier shot, made certain of his second chance during a goalmouth scramble, weaving through two defenders to deliver the coup de grace from eight yards inside the box with 11 minutes to go.
