Vice mayor Florencio Manimtim of Talisay, Batangas died early Monday morning at the San Juan De Dios Hospital in Pasay City four days after he was shot by unidentified gunmen outside of the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) complex.
Sr. Supt. Melchor Reyes, Pasay City police chief, said Manimtim, 52, died at around 3:30 a.m. at the hospital intensive care unit (ICU), where he was treated of three gunshot wounds he sustained during the Dec. 15 attack.
Reyes said police probers were eyeing politics as the motive of the attack, adding that “Task Force Talisay” formed after the attack is coordinating with their counterparts in Batangas to shed light on the identity of the suspects.
Initial investigation showed that Manimtim was on his way to a meeting with his lawyer regarding an election-related case against him when he was shot.
Police said it was not the first time that Manimtim was attacked.
In August last year, he was also injured when unidentified gunmen ambushed him and his escorts during the internment of a relative in Talisay town.
The ambush killed one of his security escorts, Guillermo Macaraig.
Though he admitted Manimtim’s family, especially his wife has yet to talk to investigators, Reyes said they have already secured a copy of the footages taken by the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) of the mall at the time of the attack.
But Reyes refused to say whether the CCTV managed to capture images of the suspects.
Pasay police investigation division head, Chief Insp. Joey Goforth said they suspected that last year’s attackers might also be involved in the second attack on Manimtim.
