Transfer of MV-22 Osprey aircraft to U.S. Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station

The U.S. forces in Japan told the Japanese Defense Ministry on Sunday it will transfer on Monday the MV-22 Osprey aircraft to the U.S. Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station in Okinawa Prefecture from a U.S. Marine base on southern Honshu, a ministry source said.

The tilt-rotor aircraft were initially expected to start arriving at the Futenma Air Station on Friday from the Iwakuni Air Station in Yamaguchi Prefecture. But an approaching typhoon forced a postponement.

Despite residents’ and the prefectural government’s continued safety concerns, the U.S. military plans to complete the transfer to Futenma of all 12 Osprey now in Iwakuni, when weather conditions allow, and begin operating them at full scale in October as scheduled.
