Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> started a rotational blackout Monday, March 28, 2011 morning, the first since affected areas were divided into subgroups.
A total of 1.55 million households in three of the five subgroups of Group 2 are set to see electricity supply halted for up to some three hours from 9:20 a.m. (12:20 a.m. GMT).
The three are parts of Tochigi and Saitama prefectures, both north of Tokyo, and Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
The company will make a decision around noon on whether to cut power supply to Group 4 from 3:20 p.m. and to Group 5 from 6:20 p.m. as planned after seeing a supply-demand balance. Other groups will have no blackout Monday.
The firm divided each of the five groups into five subgroups to help users better prepare for supply cuts.
