Sony Introduces Tablet Computer in Japan

Sony Corp. said Thursday it will launch its first tablet computer on Sept. 17 in Japan with an aim to become the leader in Android-based tablets and chase Apple Inc., maker of the popular iPad, in the broader tablet market.

The price for the Sony Tablet “S” series with a 9.4-inch display, optimized for media entertainment, is expected to be around 45,000 yen for a 16-gigabyte model and 53,000 yen for the 32-gigabyte version, according to the Japanese electronics giant.

Sony also plans to roll out in October or November its Sony Tablet “P” series, equipped with two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded and is suited for mobile communication.
