Shoppers to Donate “eco-point” Shopping Points to Japan

The Japanese government said Tuesday it has introduced a scheme that allows shoppers to donate their “eco-point” shopping points to areas in northeastern and eastern Japan affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

Under the eco-point program, the government provides points to buyers of eco-friendly home appliances and houses to promote purchases of such products.

Each eco-point can now be converted to one yen and donated through the Japanese Red Cross Society. Donations can be made over the Internet, the officials said.
