Top seed Jerad Docena scored 2.5 points in the last three rounds to capture the boys’ kiddies crown while Shania Mae Mendoza romped away with the girls’ plum in the Shell National Youth Active Chess grand finals at SM Megamall recently.
Docena’s strong finish gave the Wesleyan College of Manila bet an 8.5 points total in the nine-round tournament among the top 14-and-under players, half-a-point ahead of Austin Jacob Literatus. He won P20,000, finally clinching the elusive crown after finishing third last year.

Mendoza, playing out of International Montessori, dominated the girls’ side, closing out with eight points and beating Ynna Sophia Canape of Arellano U and Glysen Derotas of Univ. of San Carlos, who finished tied with 6.5 points. Mendoza received P10,000.
Dhona Yngayo placed fourth with 5.5 points followed by Jellie Ann Magro and Cryzelline Jill Alcaraz, who had 2 and 1.5 points, respectively, in the event sponsored by Pilipinas Shell and backed by Shell V-Power, Shellane and Shell Helix in partnership with SM Supermalls and Rudy Project.
