Russia Wants to Make Cheap Helicopters

(PNA/Xinhua) — Russia will announce a tender inviting both domestic and foreign investments for the building of helicopter carriers for its navy, said Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov on Wednesday.

“We will set the date for announcing the tender within a month. In addition to foreign companies, the United Shipbuilding Corporation will be invited to bid in the tender,” Serdyukov told reporters, adding that the bidding contest is expected to be a tight contest.

The minister did not specify the cost of the deal, but said Russia was expecting “the price structure” from the French side.

Currently Russia is in talks with France on the purchase of Mistral warships. Under a 2+2 scheme, Moscow could buy one or two French-made Mistrals and build another two at home.

The Mistral-class warship is capable of carrying 16 helicopters, four landing barges, up to 70 armored vehicles with 13 battle tanks and some 450 personnel.
