Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara protested against pressure from a Japanese government official on the Tokyo Fire Department’s “hyper rescue” team over its mission to spray water at a troubled nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, northern Japan.
Ishihara met with Prime Minister Naoto Kan and told him that a government official told a senior member of the rescue team that the government will punish the team unless the mission is carried out immediately.
According to a Tokyo metropolitan government official, the remark was made by Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Banri Kaieda.
Kan told Ishihara that the government deeply apologizes and is extremely sorry about that, according to the governor.
After the meeting, Ishihara told reporters that the national government ordered the rescue team to spray water as soon as possible, ignoring the situation on the scene.
