The Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (I-ACT) will provide alternative mode of transportation to commuters that might be affected by demonstrations of militant transport group Pinagkaisahang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON) on Wednesday in protest against the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
Around 38 government vehicles and 20 buses will provide free rides to commuters in various parts of Metro Manila during the transport rally, newly appointed I-ACT and Joint Quick Response Team (JQRT) on Transport and Disaster spokesperson Aileen Lizada.
These will be deployed in the following staging areas: Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) parking area in Guadalupe, Makati; Camp Aguinaldo and Commonwealth in Quezon City; Luneta Grandstand in Manila; Manila Central University in Caloocan; SM Marikina; and in HK Plaza in Pasay.
The I-ACT likewise reminded jeepney operators and drivers to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles as it continues the “Tanggal Bulok Tanggal Usok” (TBTU) campaign to get rid of road unworthy public utility vehicles (PUVs).
”We remind jeepney operators and drivers that they should maintain their brakes, wheels, headlights and that their vehicles should emit low emissions. They should likewise wear proper uniforms,” Lizada said in a text message to reporters.
The transportation official said she would provide updates from I-ACT member agencies as she continues to be a member of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
The I-ACT is composed of the Department of Transportation, MMDA, LTFRB, Land Transportation and the PNP- Highway Patrol Group which is in charge of crafting and implementing measures to improve the traffic situation in the country.
PISTON earlier said it would hold protest actions at LTFRB offices nationwide to call for the junking of the PUVMP and a moratorium on the TBTU campaign.
The group is urging the government to craft a people-oriented and nationalized mass transport system that will be inclusive to all transportation shareholders and ensure the welfare of the riding public. (PNA)
