Police Scandal in Negros Oriental Muddles Anti-drugs Operation

Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial director Sr. Supt. Edward Carranza has confirmed that the former Dumaguete police chief, Supt. Crisaleo Tolentino and the head of the Provincial Anti Illegal Drugs Operations Task Group (PAIDSOTG), Insp. Janelito Marquez, were officially relieved from the roster of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office last Friday.

The two police officers are now under in-depth investigation after a controversial alleged confrontation and misunderstanding between them and their men following the apprehension of a suspected drug pusher who Supt. Tolentino claimed was their asset but was arrested by the PAIDSOTG.

According to Sr. Supt Carranza, the two police officers were asked to report to the PNP Regional Office for the speedy and in-depth investigation of the case. The two police officers will also be subjected to individual investigation in order to get a fair judgment of the case.

He said he has no idea as to when the result of the investigation will be released because the case is now under the PNP Regional Office.

Carranza also clarified that he has no direct involvement in the investigation and it is highly an internal matter. He also refused to confirm if Supt. Tolentino can still return to Dumaguete and resume hisassignment as Dumaguete police chief.

The decision of the case and the assignments of both officers depend on the result of the investigation and the PNP regional director.

Although he admitted receiving calls from politicians in Negros Oriental but he promised not being intimidated by them. He said the job of the PNP and the politicians are two different fields and he will not allow his policemen to be tainted with politics.

Earlier, Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said he will not interfere with the police investigation.
