Philippine Girl Drowned in River After Baptism

A teen-aged girl was declared missing and feared to have drowned in Barukbuk River in Barangay Barukbuk, Sta. Marcela, Apayao on Monday.

Senior Inspector Cezar Malong, chief of police of Sta. Marcela town, identified the victim as Evelyn Dela Cruz, 16, a resident of Barangay Nagattatan, Allacapan, Cagayan.

Malong said that the victim went to Sta. Marcela, Apayao to be baptized as member of the Assembly of God, a religious sect.

Part of the traditional ritual of the baptism ceremony was for those to be baptized to dip their head in the knee–deep water.

However, after the baptism, De La Cruz decided to stay in the water to swim but she was carried away by strong currents to a deeper portion of the river.
