Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the Republican primaries in Maryland, Wisconsin and the U.S. capital Tuesday.
The win has widened his lead in the nomination race to challenge Democrat President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election, U.S. media reported.
“We’ve won a great victory tonight in our campaign to restore the promise of America,” Romney told his supporters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The result is likely to deal a severe blow to Rick Santorum, a conservative former senator from Pennsylvania who had pinned his hopes on competing with Romney in Wisconsin with backing from working-class voters.
