Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said the government’s bid to tap the tourism sector as a major growth driver of the economy will receive a boost through further cooperation with China.
He said Chinese tourists numbers to over 60 million globally to date and this is projected to reach about 100 million by 2015.
“We’d like to have cooperation in tourism. We’d like to get a good share of that 100 million tourists coming out of China to go to the Philippines,” he said.
Purisima disclosed that Chinese tourists are in the second spot among foreign visitors of the Philippines as of last January behind Korea surpassing those from other neighbouring countries.
“This augers well for Philippine tourism,” he stressed.
The Finance chief also said a major hotel group from China has partnered with a local company to put up about 28 hotels around the country.
