Landslides in Tohoku Japan

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano on Thursday showed the government’s intention to help reconstruct areas hit by landslides triggered by the March 11 earthquake in the Tohoku northeastern region.

The government is ready to study compiling an aid scheme for landslide-hit areas, he told reporters after inspecting landslide damage in a residential district of Aoba Ward in Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, one of the three prefectures hit hardest by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

Before visiting Aoba Ward, Edano held talks with Miyagi Governor Yoshihiro Murai at the prefectural government office.

Later in the day, Edano visited the Yuriage district in the city of Natori, Miyagi, which was devastated by the tsunami, and observed a moment of silence for victims of the huge waves.
