Jobless Rate in Japan

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Japan, excluding three northeastern prefectures hit by the March 11 disaster, stood at 4.7 pct in April, up 0.01 percentage point from the previous month, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said Tuesday.
The number of jobless people stood at 3.09 million, down 300,000 from a year before.

For the April data, the ministry excluded the three prefectures–Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima–due to difficulties conducting necessary surveys after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the region.

Separately, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said the effective ratio of job openings to job seekers stood at 0.61 in April after seasonal adjustment, down 0.02 point from the previous month.
