Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko Visit Earthquake Survivors

Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on Wednesday met with survivors of the devastating earthquake and tsunami who are taking refuge in Tokyo’s Adachi Ward.

During the 50-minute visit to the Tokyo Budoh-kan, a sports center now used as a evacuation shelter, the Emperor and Empress spoke individually to some 50 evacuees while holding their hands.

The Imperial couple inquired after the survivors’ health for the first time since the disaster hit northern and eastern Japan on March 11.

A total of about 290 evacuees are living at the center, with 270 of them fleeing from Fukushima Prefecture, which is also suffering from radiation leaks from Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s <9501> quake- and tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant.
