Japanese oil companies are boosting efforts to distribute gasoline and other oil products to the Tohoku northeastern region, which was devastated by a powerful earthquake and tsunami a week ago and faces serious energy shortages as a result.

JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corp., a unit of JX Holding Inc. <5020>, will use a freight train to transport 405 kiloliters of gasoline and 387 kiloliters of gas oil from its Negishi refinery in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, to Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, part of Tohoku.
