Japan and France are Arranging a Meeting

Japan and France are arranging a meeting between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Japan for Thursday, Japanese officials said Monday.

As this year’s chair of the Group of Eight and G-20, Sarkozy is believed to be eager to meet with Kan to convey a message of solidarity to Japan, whose northeastern and eastern regions were devastated by the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, the officials said.

On March 17, Sarkozy said he hoped to visit the country in late March.
In a phone conversation on March 18, however, Kan told the French president that it would be difficult to receive him just after the disaster.
