India’s Ultra-left Naxal Rebels

India’s ultra-left Naxal rebels, who have been holding a local lawmaker for 10 days in the eastern state of Odisha, on Wednesday set Thursday as deadline for government to meet their demands. However, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urged the rebels to extend their deadline, as his government is prepared to hold discussions on the matter.

The April 5 deadline was conveyed through an audio message by a rebel leader, Chandramouli, who claimed to be the secretary of the Andhra-Odisha border special zonal committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist, the political front of the Naxal rebels.

The message was received by journalists at Bubaneswar, state capital of Odisha.
