Highest ever foreign direct investment

The Sri Lankan government has hit its highest ever foreign direct investment reaching over one billion U.S. dollars this year, more than doubling the amount in 2010, a top minister said here on Friday.

Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told media that during 2011 foreign direct investment had jumped to nearly 1.1 billion U.S. dollars, which is almost double the 516 million U.S. dollars earned in 2010.

“When the war ended in 2009 Sri Lanka got 602 million U.S. dollars of foreign investment but it decreased in the following year, and that the government had more than redeemed itself in 2011,” the minister said.

Since Sri Lanka’s three-decade conflict ended, there has been a sharp spike in tourism with the government crossing the target of 750,000 arrivals for this year more than a month ahead of the deadline.
