Hamaoka nuclear power plant in the city of Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture

Chubu Electric Power Co. on Friday announced a plan to build an 18-meter-high seawall at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in the city of Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan, which it shut down in May at the request of Prime Minister Naoto Kan following the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The utility previously planned to build a 12-meter-high barrier.

Chubu Electric, which provides electricity to five prefectures in central Japan, plans to spend about 100 billion yen (US$ 1.3 billion) to build the 1.6-kilometer barrier to protect the nuclear power plant from tsunami expected to be triggered by a Tokai earthquake.
