At least 125 women suffering from goiter received free treatment and surgery as part of a recently-launched program of the Taguig City government called “Oplan Alis Bosyo: Thyroid Operation Program.”
Mayor Lani Cayetano said that aside from taking care of the residents’ health problems, the project aims to restore the self-confidence of all women suffering from the illness in the city.
The beneficiaries, the local chief executive said, were selected in a screening for abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland among women conducted by volunteer doctors from three partner state hospitals last Sept. 6 at the Taguig City Hall auditorium.
The three partner government hospitals are East Avenue Medical Center, Rizal Medical Center, and Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
According to Cayetano, the program was born out of her observation during her visit to various areas in the city, where she noticed that many of the women are suffering from enlargement of the thyroid.
Upon checking with the Taguig City Integrated Survey System (TCISS), the lady mayor confirmed that most of the victims of goiter in Taguig are women.
TCISS is Mayor Cayetano’s pet project which determines every need of the city’s residents via a door-to-door survey.
