Filipino Prisoners in Iran

Vice President Jejomar Binay has expressed his gratefulness to the Iranian government for granting his request to transfer Filipino inmates in the provinces of Iran to prisons near Tehran.

“The transfer will enable our Philippine Embassy personnel to visit the inmates more frequently to check their condition and extend to them whatever assistance they may need,” Binay said.

There are eight Filipinos imprisoned in Iran, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“This gesture by Iran is a positive step in strengthening ties between our two countries,” he added.

The positive response to the Vice President’s request was conveyed during the 4th Philippines-Iran Joint Consular Consultation Meeting in Tehran.

In the meeting, Foreign Undersecretary Rafael Seguis had talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on issues.
