Earthquake Dead Count – Japan Death Toll

The devastating earthquake and resultant tsunami that hit northeast Japan on March 11 left 8,805 people dead as of 9 p.m. Monday (12 p.m. GMT), the National Police Agency said.

A total of 12,654 people are missing after the diaster, and about 319,000 people are in evacuation sites, according to the agency.

The number of deaths totaled 5,364 in the hardest hit prefecture of Miyagi, followed by 2,650 in Iwate Prefecture and 735 in Fukushima Prefecture.
Iwate saw the biggest reported number of missing people, followed by 4,366 in Fukushima and 3,265 in Miyagi.
