Duterte-Cayetano says political will is key to better livelihood opportunities
“Through strong political will, Mayor Duterte and I will protect the country’s basic sectors. Our administration will embody the true meaning of ‘inclusive growth.'”
This is what vice presidential candidate and Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said to market vendors of the Pampang Public Market in Angeles, Pampanga on April 14, Thursday, as part of the Duterte-Cayetano tandem’s listening tour, “Ronda-Serye.”
The senator said that Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) contribute 65% to total employment and represent 99.6% of the operating business, generating up to 32% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He said that, if elected, he and his running mate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte will develop MSMEs by expanding affordable credit instruments. Cayetano cited his Presyo, Trabaho, Kita ( PTK) program as an example of a system that provides entrepreneurs easy access to loans.
Cayetano added that they will also establish a “bank of the poor” that will give loans to ordinary people at the lowest interest possible.
Further, he explained that having these mechanisms to facilitate provision of loans will eliminate the ordinary workers’ reliance on 5-6 loan sharks, as well as corruption that could be caused by red tape.
“These may seem difficult to implement, but they are not impossible. It all starts with political will,” said the senator.
“Matapang na solusyon at mabilis na aksyon ang kailangan ng mga napabayaan at inaaping sektor ng lipunan. Ito ang susi para sa tunay na pagbabago,” Cayetano concluded.
