Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Undersecretary Alicia R. Bala was named as the country’s representative for children to the ASEAN Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC).
This was in line with ACWC’s request that ASEAN members be represented by two members, one for women and one for children, as an important measure to ensure equitable development for women and children.
Bala took her oath before President Benigno S. Aquino III at the Malacañang Palace last Nov. 8.
The ACWC, an initiative endorsed by ASEAN Leaders at the 10th ASEAN Summit in 2004, is an inter-governmental, consultative body which handles the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedom of women and children in ASEAN.
In May this year, the DSWD opened the nomination for the selection of Philippine representative for children to ACWC.
The selection committee was composed of representatives from the government and civil society organizations, namely: DSWD, Department of Foreign Affairs, Council for the Welfare of Children, Commission on Human Rights, End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of children for sexual purposes (ECPAT Philippines), Children’s Rehabilitation Center, and Lunduyan para sa Pagpapalaganap, Pagtataguyod at Pagtatanggol ng Karapatang Pambata.
