Western Visayas has gone far as far as disaster risk reduction, manifested by awardees who were properly recognized for their initiatives during the last quarter meeting of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) and Gawad Kalasag held here Thursday.
This was underscored by Undersecretary Benito Ramos in his speech delivered by Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Military Assistant for Administration, Perfecto Peñaredondo even as he said that the OCD will continue to play its role as “working horse for DRRMCs.”
Further, he stated that the Gawad Kalasag awardees in Western Visayas “also resonate a state policy which ensures that disaster risk reduction and climate change measures are gender responsive, sensitive to indigenous knowledge systems and respectful of human rights.”
This year’s awardees for best Local DRRMCs are provinces of Antique and Guimaras for best Provincial DRRMC; towns of San Jose de Buenavista, Antique and Dumangas, Iloilo for 1st to 3rd class towns and Guimbal, Iloilo and Sapian, Capiz for 4th to 6th class municipalities for the Best MDRRMC.
On the other hand, barangays Sipitan and Cabasi in Guimbal and Hoskyn in Jordan, Guimaras were awarded as Best BRRRMC in the rural barangay category.
The Social Action Center of the Diocese of Antique was awardee for non-government organizations on Humanitarian Assistance.
Further, the Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade in Bacolod City, 5052nd Search and Rescue Auxiliary Squadron-Antique Chapter and 611 Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron, Aklan were recognized as best private/volunteer organizations.
The Best Government Emergency Responder was the Dumangas Rescue Emergency Assistance Movement (DREAM), Dumangas, Iloilo; Best Educational Institution Advocating DRMM was Cabasi-Sta. Rosa Elementary School in Guimbal while Best Medical Institution Advocating DRMM were Guimbal District Hospital and Guimaras Provincial Hospital.
