A top New People’s Army (NPA) rebel leader operating in Camarines Sur has surrendered last Friday to the Philippine Army (PA) 42nd Infantry Battalion based in Tigaon, Camarines Sur, an Army officer said Wednesday.
Danilo Sombrero, alias Ka Ben, has decided to return to the fold of the law and leave the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) after years of hearing false hopes and promises in the rebel organization, Army Maj. Angelo Guzman 9th Infantry Division, spokesperson said.
Sombrero, surrendered to Lt. Col. Ernesto A. Cruz, Commanding Officer of the 42nd IB stationed in Brgy. Mabalodbalod, Tigaon, Camarines Sur on September 23.
Sombrero, a resident of Bula, Camarines Sur, was accompanied by Herman Quingquing and William Morales, barangay captain and barangay kagawad, respectively, of Brgy. Mabalodbalod, Tigaon, Camarines Sur during his surrender, Cruz said.
Military intelligence disclosed that, Sombrero is the commanding officer (CO) of the Provincial Operational Command (POC) of the CPP-NPA operating in Camarines Sur, tasked to plan, organize, deploy and carry out tactical operations in the province.
The rebel leader said he gave up the movement in order for him and his family to live a normal and peaceful life. “I’m tired of the false hopes and promises from my former superiors in the rebel movement,” Cruz said.
Major General Josue S. Gaverza Jr., commander of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division in Bicol said that the surrender of Sombrero would be a big blow to the communist movement and it shows the worsening situation among the leaders and the ranks in the underground movement.
