The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 2 has targeted to produce 1.7 million metric tons of corn this cropping season.
Orlando Lorenzana, DA-2 technical director, said the region is the country’s top producer of corn considering the vast corn areas in its provinces.
He said DA 2 has targeted 215,000 hectares to be planted with corn but as of press time, there are 138,000 planted to the crop.
He said that the recent floods destroyed several hectares of corn plantations in Isabela and Cagayan provinces last year.
Most of the areas destroyed are located near the rivers most of which are near the stretch of Cagayan River from Isabela to Cagayan.
Lorenzana said the forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) that there will be wet summer this year will be good for the farmers who still have the opportunity to plant now.
