American cable news channel (CNN)iReport will feature the 33rd Masskara Festival as one of the “12 best things in the Philippines”.
The 22-day Masskara Festival with the theme “Life’s Good in Bacolod” kicked off here on Monday at the Bacolod public plaza with hundreds of spectators and capped by five-minute fireworks display.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia is optimistic the CNN report will bring in a larger crowd for this year’s festival. However, no date has been confirmed as to when the festival video will be shown.
iReport is a segment in CNN that invites people to send their stories using videos to be shared with the world.
“It can be recalled that the victory of the MassKara dancers in ABS-CBN’s entertainment program ‘Showtime’ recently and their performance in the Philippine Independence Day celebration in New York stirred more publicity in the festival not only in the country but also across the world,” Leonardia said.
Last year, the city under its Balik Bacolodnon Program drew some 1.2 million, both local and foreign guests.
“We have committed ourselves together with the organizers to make sure that this is one MassKara Festival that people will long remember,” Leonardia said. “On a personal note, I also want this to be the grandest ever because as city mayor this is the last Masskara Festival that I will preside.”
The elimination round of GMA DanssKara: The Masskara Dance Showdown featuring 20 dance groups also started on Monday. Festival director Eli F. J. Tajanlangit, said the DanssKara is aimed at highlighting another breed of dancers.
