Chubu Electric Power Prepares Nuclear Radiation Disaster

Chubu Electric Power Co. <9502> conducted a drill at a nuclear power plant in central Japan Tuesday to strengthen its preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis.

The drill comes after radiation leaked out of Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeastern Japan, which was damaged by the March 11 massive quake and tsunami.

Some 140 workers including employees from Chubu Electric Power’s partners took part in the drill at the Hamaoka nuclear plant in Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture.

The drill simulated a strong quake and tsunami that leave the plant flooded and without power to cool reactors.
The participants confirmed necessary responses, including connecting cables to power generators and manually pouring water into reactors.
