Catholic Priest Wants Manny Pacquiao to Retire
For a Catholic, prelate Manny Pacquiao should retire from boxing to be able to concentrate in serving his constituents in the province of Saranggani in Mindanao.
Marbel, South Cotabato Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez said the boxing great should hang up his boxing gloves as his favorite sport hinders him from fully serving his elective position.
“It’s really a big hindrance. How can you serve full time if you are practicing because your focus is boxing?” the prelate said.
Gutierrez said, although Pacquiao only fight twice a year, most of his time has been dedicated to trainings rather than devoting it to serving the people whom elected him.
“There is really a conflict of interest because he is in Las Vegas when he is supposed to be here (serving his constituents),” he added.
Pacquiao won as the Representative of the province of Saranggani in the May 10 polls.
But, the former head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines National Secretariat for Social Action (CBCP-NASSA) said that the decision on whether to retire or not, will be decided by Pacquiao himself.
Gutierrez said that he understands the reason why Pacquiao wants to fight and win his upcoming boxing match with Mexican Antonio Margarito.
“I understand he is raising money to put up his hospital in Saranggani because they don’t have one there,” Gutierrez said.
On Saturday, November 12 (Sunday, November 14, Manila Time), the Filipino boxing hero will fight the Mexican boxer at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA.(PNA)
