Cancer is Top Death Cause in Cuba

Cancer ranks as the second death cause in Cuba after cardiovascular disease, local daily Juventud Rebelde reported Sunday, citing Cuban sanitary sources.

Integral Program to Control Cancer director Teresa Romero said that despite control action, incidence of and mortality from cancer continue increasing.

Cancer has been the second death cause in Cuba since 1970, a report of this program said.

In 2009, Cuba registered 21,316 deaths from cancer.

Across hospitals of Havana, Villa Calra, Sancti Spiritus, Cienfuegos, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo provinces, cancer is the main death cause.

Romero said that since 1969, the Cuban health system carried out action to reduce cancer’s mortality.

She noted there have been achievements in regulation mechanisms and information elements to control cancer. (PNA/Xinhua)
