The Russian leadership is moving along the right path in building democracy in the country, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said.
“Leading politicians [in Russia] want to make Russia a country where the rule of law, stability and democracy prevail,” Schroeder said in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, excerpts from which were published by the newspaper’s online version on Saturday, November 24.
In his opinion, President Vladimir Putin’s initial task was to restore statehood and stability in the country. “Vladimir Putin did this and this is his historical achievement,” Schroeder added.
He noted that the democratic process in Russia is not going easily. “The country carries its historical burden, has a gigantic territory, consists of more than a hundred peoples, and fights against Islamic terror,” he said.
