Brig. Gen. Gerardo Layug is the new head of the 8th Infantry Division, tasked to secure the eastern Visayas.
Maj. Harold Cabunoc, Army spokesperson, said Layug is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class 1980.
He added Layug replaced Maj. Gen. Mario Chan during turnover ceremonies presided by PA chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Bautista last April 3.
Layug previously commanded the 301st Infantry Brigade, of the 3rd Infantry Division which is stationed in Dingle, Iloilo before his designation as the deputy commander of Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City.
Chan commanded the Army soldiers in this region for two years.
He was the former commander of the 4th Infantry Division in Cagayan De Oro City before his assumption as 8th Infantry Division commander.
He is one of the remaining active members of the PMA Class of 1978.
Under Chan’s term, the 8th Infantry Division has built a harmonious relationship with local officials.
It was an effort which resulted from the community’s call for the PA to stay in the area to keep them protected from insurgencies and at the same time help assist them in peacefully carrying out development programs.
