Baguio City Builds Olympic Standard Sports Facility
He revealed that for so long, officials here had lobbied with the Philippines Sports Commission (PSC) for its development since the late 1990s but only the Olympic size swimming pool was realized.
“The city government is now reviewing feasibility studies for the Athletic Bowl modernization project,” he said.
The area is familiar even to foreign visitors as the wide area is only adjacent to Burnham Park and the venue of big events like the yearly field demonstrations and contests of the Baguio Flower Festival or “Panagbenga”.
The long snagged development plan was revived when a Korean investors group offered to the city government their desire to pursue the city’s intention for the sports facility.
Farinas said even Philippines boxing icon Congressman Manny Paquiao would be happy for the intended development as in his previous jogging along the Burnham Lake, his more intense running had to be diverted in the Teachers Camp oval — the only rubberized track and field facility here.
He said that even with the good intention of the present officials for the development, there are still those who oppose or entertain doubts about the project.
“But we could defend our position on the issue as we believe that the long overdue development of our Athletic Oval shall further enhance what we want Baguio to be,” he said.
