Avalanche in Pakistan Buries Soldiers

At least 130 soldiers were feared buried in an avalanche that occurred in the Siachen Glacier area in northern Pakistan on Saturday, reported local state-run TV channel PTV.

According to the local media reports, the incident took place at about 6:00 a.m. local time on Saturday when an avalanche hit an army camp in the Siachen Glacier, the world’s second longest glacier in the non-polar areas.

The buried include a battalion commander, said PTV.

Pakistani army has started rescue work after the avalanche was reported. Army helicopters have been dispatched to the site for rescue work.

Other details about the incident are not immediately known at this point.
