ASEAN Countries to Help Storm Victims in Philippines

ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan, who is also ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator, offered condolences to Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert F. Del Rosario over the losses of lives brought by the tropical storm Sendong (Washi) which struck the Philippines on Dec. 17 and conveyed the region’s readiness to assist Manila in their relief and recovery efforts, a press statement from the ASEAN Secretariat said here on Friday.

“ASEAN, the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Center) and the ASEAN Secretariat stand ready to assist the Philippines in their response and recovery efforts,” Surin said in a letter to Rosario.

The Philippines declared a state of national calamity on Dec. 20, 2011 due to the tropical storm.

Indonesia, as ASEAN chair, has issued a statement on the recent disaster, expressing ASEAN countries’ readiness in providing the Philippines with support and assistance to help bring about swift recovery in accordance with the ASEAN spirit of solidarity.

In this regard, ASEAN Secretariat is requested to work together with the AHA Center to provide necessary support and assistance.
