Anniversary crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

The earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan on March 11 and the ensuing crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was the top-ranked domestic news story of 2011 in a Kyodo News poll released Friday.

The compilers of the poll put the worst natural catastrophe in Japan’s postwar history in first place due to its overwhelming importance while the following nine stories, including Yoshihiko Noda assuming the post of prime minister and Japan’s victory in the Women’s World Cup, were selected by voting.

The poll covered senior editors at Kyodo News and its member or subscriber newspapers and broadcasters, who were asked to select the 10 biggest domestic news events of this year.
