Malaysian Aids Council president, Datuk Dr Raj Karim, urged employers to provide job opportunities to people with HIV to enable them to be independent and self-sufficient.
She said the current stigma and discrimination within society against people with HIV was still high, to the extent that they found it hard to secure employment.
“The discrimination against HIV positive people so far has caused them to be oppressed in every aspect of life, particularly in seeking employment. They too have every right to be placed in sectors matching their skills.
“There’s no reason to marginalise them as they can also work as well as others and there’s nothing preventing them from being productive,” she told reporters after closing the “Empowering People Living With HIV” programme here Sunday.
