Abu Sayyaf Members Arrested

The two alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf group who were arrested Friday afternoon in Mati City, Davao Oriental were found to be inactive.

This was the revelation Monday morning of Supt. Jose Carumba, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office (PRO 11).

Carumba also confirmed the arrest but the suspects were no longer operating or already inactive Abu Sayyaf members after the May 27, 2001 Dos Palmas kidnapping of several foreigners.

“There is nothing to be alarmed of since the suspects are no longer active,” he said.

At 2 p.m. Friday, authorities conducted a raid at a residence in Matiao, Mati City, which led to the arrest of Abu Abdul Aziz Kunting, alias Robert Tan, and Abu Akmed Kunting, alias Jason Tan.

The raiding team is composed of the joint elements from the Philippine Army’s 701st Brigade and the 28th Infantry Battalion, 104th Military Intelligence Company, the Military Intelligence Group 11 and 9, the Davao Oriental Provincial Police Office, the Special Action Forces of the Philippine National Police, and the Mati City Police.
